Turkish open water swimmer Aysu Turkoglu has become the youngest Turkish athlete to successfully cross Japan’s Tsugaru Strait, completing the challenging swim in 13 hours and 44 minutes, her sponsor Vestel announced.
The 25-year-old swimmer covered approximately 45 kilometers through strong currents and rough seas in one of the world’s most demanding open-water swimming routes.
The Tsugaru Strait, which separates Japan’s Honshu and Hokkaido islands, is widely regarded as one of the most difficult crossings in marathon swimming due to its unpredictable conditions and powerful tidal currents.
In a statement posted on X, Vestel said Turkoglu completed the crossing after "an incredible 13-hour and 44-minute battle against strong currents and high waves," adding that she became the youngest Turkish athlete to conquer the channel.
Vestel also said Turkoglu now has one crossing remaining to complete the prestigious Oceans Seven challenge, a series of seven iconic open-water swims widely regarded as the sport’s equivalent of mountaineering’s Seven Summits.
