German club Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Saturday that captain Emre Can will remain at the club until 2027 after signing a one-year contract extension while recovering from a serious knee injury.
According to a statement from the club, sporting director Lars Ricken said the club made a clear decision early on to stand by the player. "We said immediately after his serious injury that we wanted to continue supporting him.
Now Emre needs to focus entirely on his recovery, and then we'll be delighted when he returns to the pitch," he said.
Speaking after the extension, the Germany international said his priority is to return to action as soon as possible.
"My goal is to get healthy again as quickly as possible, to be back on the pitch with my teammates, and to be successful with the club," he said.
The 32-year-old midfielder suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in February during Dortmund’s 3-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
Can joined Dortmund in 2020 from Juventus and is set to become the club’s longest-serving current player next season.
Before the injury, Can was expected to leave Dortmund at the end of the season, with several Istanbul clubs monitoring his situation.
Besiktas, Fenerbahce and Galatasaray were all linked with a potential move as they waited for clarity over his future at the German side.
Before being sidelined, he made 16 appearances this season, including six in the UEFA Champions League, and scored three goals.
