In a historic display of scoring, Bam Adebayo led the Miami Heat to a 150–129 victory over the Washington Wizards on Tuesday, recording 83 points, the second-highest total in NBA history.
Adebayo surpassed the late Kobe Bryant’s 81-point performance for the Los Angeles Lakers in 2006, and now ranks only behind Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points in 1962.
The Heat center began the game with an explosive first quarter, tallying 31 points on 10-of-16 shooting. By halftime, he had accumulated 43 points and continued his scoring surge with 19 points in the third quarter, maintaining a relentless pace. With just over a minute remaining, two free throws tied Bryant’s record, and two more put him at 83 points, prompting his substitution to a standing ovation at the Kaseya Center.
“This is number one, for sure,” Adebayo said after the game. “I wish I could relive it twice. It wouldn’t have been possible without my teammates and the support of the fans.”
Reflecting on surpassing his childhood idol, Bryant, who died in 2020, Adebayo added, “It’s Wilt, me, and then Kobe, that sounds surreal. I’ve always wondered what he would say… He’d probably say, ‘Do it again.’”
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra described the performance as “an absolutely surreal night,” emphasizing Adebayo’s preparation and work ethic. “He has willed himself into being a premier offensive talent,” Spoelstra said.
Adebayo’s final stat line included 20-of-43 from the field, 7-of-22 from three-point range, and 36 made free throws, setting an NBA record for free throws made in a single game. While widely recognized for his defensive versatility, Adebayo’s scoring exhibition underscored his elite offensive capabilities.
The victory marked the Heat’s 37th win of the season, while the Wizards suffered their 48th loss, despite scoring efforts from Alex Sarr (28) and Will Riley (22).
