Besiktas, one of Türkiye’s top-tier football clubs, is reportedly pursuing Austrian international David Alaba, who currently plays for Spanish giant Real Madrid.
The Istanbul club has placed the 33-year-old defender on its transfer shortlist as he struggles to secure regular first-team minutes in Madrid, Turkish media reported.
Alaba’s contract with Real Madrid is set to end at the conclusion of the current season. Reports suggest the Austrian is open to joining a club where he can expect consistent playing time during the latter stage of his career.
In this context, Besiktas plans to initiate contact with Real Madrid in the January transfer window to discuss a potential move, Turkish sports outlet Fanatik reported.
While Besiktas is working to finalize the deal quickly, it is not alone in its pursuit. Italian side Fiorentina and two Major League Soccer (MLS) teams, New York City FC and Charlotte FC, are also reportedly interested in acquiring Alaba.
Known for his versatility, Alaba has played primarily as a centre-back and left-back but is also capable of contributing in midfield. His adaptability and playmaking ability have long been considered assets at the top level of European football.
Transferred to Real Madrid from Bayern Munich in July 2021, Alaba has struggled to secure playing time since suffering long-term injuries over the past two seasons. This season, he has made only six appearances, totaling 184 minutes.
Another Turkish giant, Galatasaray, is also said to be circling the player, according to earlier reports in Turkish media.
