Besiktas came from behind to beat Fenerbahce 2-1 away in the Istanbul derby Saturday, with Dusan Vlahovic scoring the winning goal after a heated clash with Milan Skriniar.
The derby at Chobani Stadium brought together two sides that had collected 6 points from their opening three league games. It was the first major Istanbul derby of the new Super Lig season, with the sold-out fixture kicking off at 8 p.m. local time (GMT+3) and Halil Umut Meler serving as referee.
The Black Eagles created the first clear chances of the match, with Trossard testing Ederson in the 16th minute before the goalkeeper denied Olaitan's long-range effort six minutes later.
The Yellow Canaries took the lead in the 26th minute after Brown sent a long throw into the box. The ball bounced off the defense and fell to Skriniar, who finished from inside the six-yard box.
Besiktas responded in the 38th minute when Trossard sent a low pass into the area from the left. Ridvan Yilmaz met it with a powerful shot from the left side to make it 1-1.
Fenerbahce nearly went back in front before halftime, as Greenwood moved past Ridvan and Emirhan before firing from an angle. His effort went narrowly wide, leaving the two sides level at the break.
The match turned heated in the 52nd minute when Vlahovic and Skriniar confronted each other during an off-the-ball incident.
Vlahovic appeared to appeal for a handball, and Skriniar reacted to him. The Besiktas striker responded, and the two players came head-to-head before Skriniar's intervention sent him to the ground.
Meler stopped play and consulted VAR before showing Skriniar a yellow card. Ederson was also booked after leaving his goal, while Vlahovic received a yellow card as play resumed.
The visitors came close to taking the lead in the 57th minute when Olaitan found Vlahovic behind the defense. Ederson, however, blocked the striker's close-range effort.
The hosts threatened again in the 66th minute when Kerem Akturkoglu headed down Ederson's goal kick for Vedat Muric. Muric's shot from outside the box was saved by Nübel.
Besiktas created another opening a minute later, but Ederson closed down the angle and turned Ilhan Fakili's shot behind.
The Black Eagles moved ahead in the 73rd minute after a quick attack. Olaitan found Orkun Kokcu on the left, and the midfielder picked out Vlahovic near the penalty spot.
With Ederson off his line, Vlahovic sent the ball into the empty net to put Besiktas 2-1 ahead.
The Yellow Canaries pushed for an equalizer, but the visitors kept their lead. Trossard nearly added a third in the 81st minute, though his shot from outside the box went just wide.
The victory lifted Besiktas to 9 points after four league games, while Fenerbahce remained on 6 points following its second defeat of the season.
