Portugal’s football federation has opened an urgent disciplinary case over Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp ahead of the Denmark match, leaving him facing a possible six-month ban and a fine of up to €1,000 ($1,200).

The federation’s disciplinary council has imposed an additional provisional suspension on the 41-year-old world star, adding a precautionary measure to the automatic suspension already in place.

The case has now been referred to the federation’s disciplinary investigation committee, which will determine whether Ronaldo broke the rules by leaving the camp without justification.

Portugal examines possible disciplinary breaches

The proceedings mark the first formal disciplinary action in the case. The federation has classified the investigation as urgent but will keep its details confidential until the process concludes.

The case stems from Ronaldo’s departure from the national team camp during the latest international break, just 24 hours before Portugal’s match against Denmark. The forward left in protest against comments by coach Jorge Jesus, setting off a controversy around the national team captain.

Under the federation’s rules, a player who leaves a national team camp without justification after being officially called up can receive a suspension of between one month and six months. Professional players may also face a financial penalty.

Ronaldo apologizes but calls for tough sanction

After leaving the camp, Ronaldo returned and released a lengthy statement explaining his version of events. He also apologized to his teammates and the Portuguese public.

The forward called for a severe punishment, arguing that his position as national team captain set him apart from an ordinary player.

While the disciplinary process moves forward, Portugal’s official national team social media accounts celebrated Ronaldo’s goal for Al-Nassr against Al-Diriyah in the Saudi Roshn League on Friday.

The final penalty will depend on the outcome of the investigation.
