Former Real Madrid center and ex-Turkiye league player Marcus Slaughter has been officially summoned by a Spanish court over allegations of using a fake Equatorial Guinea passport during the 2014–2015 season. Slaughter, who previously played for Darussafaka and Karsiyaka in Türkiye, is at the center of a long-standing investigation led by Spanish authorities.

According to Spanish daily La Vanguardia, Interpol agents located Slaughter at his residence in Texas, U.S., earlier this year. Following that, the 27th Investigative Court of Madrid formally initiated the legal process, ordering Slaughter to appoint legal representation within three days of receiving the official indictment.

Accused of using false Cotonou status

The case dates back to Slaughter’s time with Real Madrid, when he competed in Spain’s ACB League under Cotonou Agreement provisions, which allowed non-EU players with specific bilateral agreements to count as local players. Spanish police, however, discovered that Slaughter and fellow American forward Andy Panko, then playing for Fuenlabrada, had allegedly used fraudulent Equatorial Guinea passports, both bearing the same serial number.

Spanish prosecutors are seeking an 18-month prison sentence for Slaughter. However, FC Barcelona, acting as a civil party in the case, is pushing for a five-year sentence, arguing that Real Madrid’s use of an ineligible player directly affected the outcomes of major competitions. Barcelona has formally requested that Real Madrid’s 2014–2015 Liga Endesa and Copa del Rey titles be annulled.

Slaughter, now 39, had initially appeared before the court during the early stages of the investigation but was later unreachable, prompting an international arrest warrant. That warrant has since been lifted following Interpol's success in delivering court notices.
