Fenerbahce has started preparing for the new season and is aiming to make significant additions not only to the squad but also to its coaching staff. A former club legend is reportedly being considered to join Jose Mourinho’s team as an assistant.
After joining the club with high expectations, Mourinho has faced growing criticism due to the team's underwhelming performance. Fenerbahce is set to finish second in the Super Lig and exited early from both the Turkish Cup and European competitions. With club elections scheduled for September, Mourinho’s future at the club is uncertain.
Club president Ali Koc is said to favor continuing with the Portuguese manager. However, international reports suggest Mourinho has received offers from several clubs and is currently evaluating them. If he remains at the helm, Fenerbahce plans to take further steps to ensure “absolute success.”
According to Sabah newspaper, Fenerbahce is not only working to strengthen the player roster but is also looking to reinforce its technical team. The club is reportedly seeking someone who understands the Super Lig, including referees, rivals, and Fenerbahce’s own identity. Volkan Demirel has emerged as a leading candidate.
Demirel, who joined Fenerbahce as a player in 2002 and retired in 2019, previously served as an assistant coach at the club. He later managed Karagumruk, Hatayspor, and most recently Bodrum FK. Demirel has frequently expressed his loyalty to the club, often stating, “If Fenerbahce calls, you don’t say no.”
In past interviews, Demirel openly expressed his ambition: “My goal is to one day become the head coach of Fenerbahce. I will continue to work hard to achieve that.”
