Istanbul club Fenerbahce’s key defender Milan Skriniar suffered an injury during his side’s 3-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest in the UEFA Europa League round of 16 play-off first leg on Thursday, raising uncertainty over his availability for both club and national team duty.

The injury occurred in the 23rd minute, forcing Skriniar off the pitch, with Türkiye's Caglar Soyuncu coming on in his place. The extent of the injury has not yet been confirmed, with medical staff set to determine the severity after further examinations.

Tedesco confirms serious concern over Skriniar injury

After the match, coach Domenico Tedesco said the injury appeared to be significant and could affect the team’s defensive plans.

"The situation with Skriniar looks serious. It is a big problem," Tedesco said.

He also confirmed that Skriniar would miss the second leg against Nottingham Forest, along with Jayden Oosterwolde, who is suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

Possible absence in Slovakia World Cup

Initial assessments indicated Skriniar could remain sidelined for three to four weeks, depending on the results of MRI scans.

Such a recovery period would put his participation in Slovakia’s FIFA World Cup qualifying play-off match against Kosovo on Mar. 26 in doubt, as well as a potential play-off final on Mar. 31 against either Türkiye or Romania if Slovakia advance.

Skriniar has been a regular starter for Fenerbahce this season, appearing in 35 matches and scoring two goals.
