Fernando Alonso will continue racing in Formula 1 in 2027 after deciding to remain with Aston Martin, pushing back retirement plans and extending his career into a 24th season.
The two-time world champion will once again line up alongside Lance Stroll, with Aston Martin confirming that both drivers will stay on for next year.
Alonso had spent several months weighing up his future after Aston Martin struggled with performance and reliability during the 2026 campaign.
The 45-year-old joined Aston Martin from Alpine in 2023 and immediately picked up a series of podium finishes, although the team's competitiveness dropped off in the seasons that followed.
Despite the difficult 2026 campaign, Alonso has now opted to carry on for at least one more year, keeping one of Formula 1's longest careers going into 2027.
Alonso has also spoken critically about parts of Formula 1's new 2026 regulations, particularly the impact of battery management on how the cars are driven and raced.
Aston Martin, meanwhile, has struggled to consistently pick up points amid difficulties involving both the car and its Honda power unit.
Alonso scored a point at the Monaco Grand Prix before later finishing ninth at the Dutch Grand Prix, adding two more points to his season total.
Executive chairman Lawrence Stroll said Alonso and Lance Stroll had played an important role in Aston Martin's development, while the team described both drivers as being on long-term contracts.
With his return now confirmed, Alonso is also set to move beyond the milestone of 450 Formula 1 Grand Prix starts during the 2027 season.
