Dutch giant Feyenoord Rotterdam has officially announced the signing of Gaoussou Diarra, a 22-year-old winger from Türkiye’s Istanbulspor, who originally had no intention of becoming a professional footballer, having come to Türkiye to pursue a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
The Eredivisie side secured Diarra on a five-year contract valid until 2029, following a €3.5 million ($4.12 million) transfer agreement.
Diarra's journey to the Dutch top flight is unconventional. Originally arriving in Türkiye in 2024 to study business administration at Halic University in Istanbul, the young talent began attracting attention on the pitch rather than in lecture halls. After signing a professional contract with second-tier side Tuzlaspor, Diarra became a free agent when the club was relegated and hit by foreign player restrictions.
Seizing the opportunity, Istanbulspor brought Diarra on board, where he quickly made his mark. Over the course of the season, he scored 16 goals and contributed 2 assists in 37 matches, showcasing both consistency and attacking instinct.
Diarra expressed his excitement following the move to Rotterdam, stating, “It feels amazing to play for such a major European club. I’ve never played in a stadium like De Kuip before. My family and I are proud, and I’m grateful for this chance to grow. I can’t wait to contribute and do my best.”
His strong performances at club level also caught the attention of national selectors, earning him a call-up to the Mali national team for the first time in June.
