Former Greek basketball referee Petros Papapetrou has been placed in pretrial detention as part of a match-fixing and bribery investigation, becoming the first defendant ordered to remain in custody pending trial, according to Greek media reports.
The 53-year-old, who retired from refereeing in the summer of 2026, was detained after authorities discovered €820,000 ($950,000 approximately) in cash at his residence.
Papapetrou reportedly claimed that the money came from his previous earnings as a forest officer and his family's income.
The investigation has also led to the detention of six individuals, including Greek Basketball Federation President Vangelis Liolios and EuroLeague referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha, over allegations of match-fixing and bribery.
Papapetrou is the first defendant in the case to be ordered into pretrial custody, while the proceedings involving the other individuals remain separate from that detention decision.
