Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany was taken to hospital Friday after collapsing during a training session with the club's reserve team, with the German champions confirming that the 40-year-old remains under medical supervision.

The Bundesliga club announced that Kompany was undergoing medical examinations following the incident and would continue receiving hospital care.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl emphasized that the Belgian coach's health was the club's immediate priority, adding that the coaching staff would take over his responsibilities while he recovered.

"We at FC Bayern will do everything we can to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all the necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs," Eberl said.

Kompany's collapse follows recent illness

The hospitalization comes after Kompany recently struggled with a viral infection that had already disrupted his coaching duties.

He missed training and a press conference ahead of Bayern's Champions League draw against Arsenal at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, with English assistant coach Aaron Danks stepping in to oversee preparations and address reporters.

Following the Arsenal match, Kompany acknowledged that he had continued working despite feeling unwell.

"I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn't listen to my body—and then at some point my body just said, 'enough is enough!'" he said.

Danks previously explained that the illness had caused Kompany pain in his legs and stressed that the coach needed sufficient time to recover, regardless of how long his absence might last.

Bayern has not announced when Kompany could return to the sidelines.

The German league leaders are scheduled to face third-placed Freiburg on Saturday before traveling to Madrid for their Champions League meeting with Atletico Madrid on Nov. 3.

Atletico also responded to news of his hospitalization, sending a message of support through social media.

"We wish you a speedy recovery. We hope to see you here in Madrid, on the bench, in a few days," the Spanish club wrote.

Bayern coaching staff takes charge as Kompany recovers

Kompany, a former Manchester City captain and Belgium international, took charge of Bayern in 2024 after managing English club Burnley.

His appointment initially came as a surprise following Burnley's relegation from the Premier League, but he went on to lead Bayern to consecutive Bundesliga titles in his first two seasons and the German Cup in 2026.

Under his management, Bayern have recorded 57 victories and just three defeats across 74 Bundesliga matches, while the club currently sits at the top of the league standings on goal difference.

Before moving into management, Kompany built his playing career at Anderlecht, Hamburg and Manchester City, where he captained the English club during its rise to domestic dominance.

He later returned to Anderlecht to begin his coaching career before taking over at Burnley, where he secured the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in 2023.

Bayern has expressed confidence in Kompany's assistants to handle the team's immediate commitments, with the club maintaining that his recovery will take precedence over his return to coaching.
