A live television gaffe during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final briefly turned the Spain-Argentina showpiece into a Hollywood moment Sunday, when a Fox Sports broadcaster mistakenly identified actor Matt Damon as Brad Pitt in the stands, drawing swift on-air correction and sending the clip viral.
"Brad Pitt also among the fans here," play-by-play announcer John Strong told viewers, before analyst Stu Holden stepped in with a gentle correction: "Oh, that's Matt Damon."
Damon, who this weekend stars in Christopher Nolan's blockbuster The Odyssey, was in attendance at the final alongside his wife Luciana Damon, who was born in Argentina.
The film, in which Damon plays the legendary Greek hero Odysseus, was released worldwide July 17.
The mix-up carried an unintentional layer of irony. Brad Pitt starred as the Greek warrior Achilles in the 2004 epic Troy, itself drawn from Homer's Iliad, while Damon's new film is adapted from Homer's companion epic, The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan.

Damon was not the only celebrity in attendance. Figure skating Olympian Ilia Malinin was also spotted among the crowd at the final, which was scoreless at the first hydration break, according to USA Today.
The match carries historic stakes for both nations. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, is chasing a second consecutive World Cup title.
Spain, featuring teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, is bidding to become the first nation in history to hold both the men's and women's World Cup titles simultaneously within the same cycle.
The broadcaster confusion capped an already remarkable few days for the Boston-born actor.
The Odyssey debuted to a number-one finish at the global box office on its opening weekend, and Damon rounded out the weekend courtside, or rather pitchside, for one of the most anticipated finals in recent World Cup memory.
