France head coach Didier Deschamps will miss the team’s final FIFA World Cup Group I match against Norway after the death of his mother, the French Football Federation confirmed on Tuesday.
The federation said Deschamps received the news on Tuesday morning and will return to France to attend the funeral. As a result, the 57-year-old manager will not be present on the bench for Friday’s match in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Deschamps’ assistant Guy Stephan will take charge of the French squad during his absence until the coach returns.
France has already secured qualification for the knockout stage of the tournament after recording victories over Senegal and Iraq.
The match against Norway will determine the final Group I standings, with France looking to finish at the top of the group.
The fixture will be part of Deschamps’ final tournament as France manager. Since taking charge in 2012, he has guided the national team to major success, including the 2018 FIFA World Cup title.
He also led France to the 2022 World Cup final, where they were defeated by Argentina on penalties, and the Euro 2016 final, where they lost to Portugal.
