Turkish fencer Furkan Yaman won the gold medal in the junior men's saber category at the Junior and Cadet World Fencing Championships held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, according to a statement from the Türkiye Fencing Federation.
Yaman defeated American William Morrill 15-13 in the final to become the first Turkish fencer to win a world championship title in 103 years.
In the championship final, Yaman faced William Morrill of the United States. Yaman won the match 15-13 to claim the gold medal.
Prior to this result, Yaman had also won first place at the European Championship held in Tbilisi, Georgia. With his world title, he is now the first Turkish athlete in 103 years to win a fencing world championship.
A total of 161 athletes competed in the junior men's saber category. William Morrill of the US finished second, while Ahmed Hesham of Egypt and Nurmukhammed Zhailybay of Kazakhstan both finished third. The Türkiye Fencing Federation issued a congratulatory statement following the result.
