Galatasaray secured a 2-1 victory over archrivals Fenerbahce in the Istanbul derby Monday evening, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice in the first half of the Week 9 Trendyol Super Lig encounter.
The hosts threatened early, with Baris Alper Yilmaz coming close to breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute. After receiving a pass from Jakobs, who had been set up by Batrakov on the left flank, Yilmaz fired from inside the penalty area, but Fenerbahce goalkeeper Ederson blocked his effort with his feet.
Two minutes later, Yilmaz tested Ederson again, this time collecting a pass from Lemina before shooting from the left side of the box. The Brazilian goalkeeper was once again equal to the effort.
Fenerbahce created a chance in the 20th minute when Oguz Aydin delivered a free kick from outside the penalty area on the left, sending the ball narrowly over the far post.
Galatasaray finally broke the deadlock in the 29th minute through Osimhen. The Nigerian striker received a pass from Yilmaz near the right edge of the penalty arc, advanced into the box and finished with a left-footed strike inside the near post to put the hosts ahead 1-0.
Osimhen nearly doubled his tally in the 38th minute after running behind Fenerbahce's defense to collect a pass from Batrakov, but Ederson pushed his shot from the right side of the penalty area out for a corner.
The striker completed his brace just before halftime, extending Galatasaray's lead to 2-0 in the 44th minute.
Following a throw-in from Jakobs on the left, Ederson punched the ball clear of the penalty area. Sanchez collected the loose ball and fired toward goal, with Osimhen redirecting the effort into the net with a header.
Fenerbahce pulled a goal back through Irfan Can Kahveci in the 62nd minute, reducing the deficit to 2-1, but Galatasaray held on to secure the derby victory.
Galatasaray went into the Istanbul derby at the top of the Super Lig standings with 19 points from their opening eight matches, having recorded six wins, one draw and one defeat.
The Yellow-Reds hosted Fenerbahce, who entered the ninth round in third place with 16 points after five victories, one draw and two defeats.
Fenerbahce, known as the Yellow-Navy Blues, were looking to close the gap on their Istanbul rivals but fell short despite Kahveci's second-half goal.
