Ilkay Gundogan, whose contract with Manchester City expires in June, quietly arrived in Istanbul this week and held talks with Galatasaray officials at Istinye Park. The 33-year-old midfielder is also being pursued by Fenerbahce President Ali Koc.

Galatasaray, which had previously shown interest in Gundogan last season, is intensifying efforts to sign the German international to fill the creative midfield gap left by Dries Mertens’ departure. Gundogan, who has publicly declared his support for Galatasaray in the past, reportedly stated, "If I come to Türkiye, I’ll play for Galatasaray."

City unlikely to block move

Gundogan joined Manchester City from Barcelona on a 1+1-year contract. However, should the player express a desire to join Galatasaray, City is expected not to activate the extension clause, effectively clearing the way for the transfer. Gundogan is expected to hold further meetings with Galatasaray officials today before returning to Barcelona. If final details are resolved, the club plans to offer him a two-year contract.

Fenerbahce also in race

Fenerbahce is also preparing a bid. Club president Ali Koc is keen to secure Gundogan’s signature, both as a strategic move ahead of Galatasaray and to boost morale among supporters ahead of the upcoming elections. Koc is said to be preparing a formal offer. Notably, Gundogan has previously appeared in commercials for Ford, a company owned by Koc.

Recognition for social contributions

In addition to his football career, Gundogan has been awarded the Mevlude Genc Medal this year for his contributions to social cohesion. The award recognizes his long-standing stance against hate, exclusion, and racism. As a former captain of the German national team, the Turkish-German footballer has used his platform to promote tolerance and unity.
