Galatasaray has issued a sharp rebuke to Liverpool following the injury of Dutch forward Noa Lang during their recent Champions League clash, accusing the Premier League club of deflecting responsibility and failing to apologize.
Eray Yazgan, Galatasaray’s general secretary, told Turkish media that Liverpool was “trying to change the agenda” instead of addressing the incident.
“While there is a serious situation threatening player health, Liverpool is attempting to divert attention by raising unfounded claims about social media comments directed at their player Konate,” Yazgan said.
Yazgan criticized Liverpool’s response, calling it “unacceptable.”
“Not a single apology has been offered to our club or our player. This silence and disregard for responsibility is an effort to cover up the incident,” he added.
UEFA has opened an investigation into the challenge that left Lang injured, according to Yazgan, who stressed that Galatasaray would continue pressing the matter.
“A club like Liverpool must first account for the scandal that occurred on its pitch and issue the necessary apology without delay. We will not let this go,” he said.
Lang was hurt in the 80th minute of the match, which Liverpool won 4-0, when his hand was caught in advertising boards. He later required surgery for a deep cut to his finger.
Liverpool on Friday condemned racist abuse directed toward defender Ibrahima Konate as “dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate.”
The France international was involved in a clash with Victor Osimhen that resulted in the Galatasaray striker being substituted at halftime with what was later diagnosed as a broken arm.
Liverpool won Wednesday’s last-16 second leg at Anfield 4-0 for a 4-1 victory on aggregate.
The incident with Osimhen led to center-back Konate being targeted on social media, behavior which Liverpool said was “utterly unacceptable.”
“It is dehumanising, cowardly and rooted in hate. Racism has no place in football, no place in society and no place anywhere — online or offline,” the club said in a statement.
