Galatasaray will go into their UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg away to Liverpool with both a first-leg advantage and a recent record that has largely held up well against English opposition.

The Turkish champions beat Liverpool 1-0 at RAMS Park in the opening match and now head to England looking to see the tie through and book a place in the quarterfinals. Their latest run against clubs from England has given them further reason to believe. Across their last six such matches in European competition, Galatasaray have picked up four wins, one draw, and just one defeat.

Liverpool, by contrast, came through the league phase more comfortably. The English side won six of their eight matches and finished third in the 36-team table, which sent them straight into the round of 16.

Recent results show Galatasaray has learned how to hang in against English sides

Galatasaray have not been overrun by English teams in recent seasons. Instead, they have repeatedly found ways to stay in games and take points.

During the 2023-24 Champions League group stage, they beat Manchester United 3-2 away and then drew 3-3 at home. In the following season's Europa League league phase, they also beat Tottenham 3-2 in Istanbul. This season brought two more high-profile tests, a 1-0 home win over Liverpool and a 2-0 away defeat to Manchester City, before Galatasaray again beat Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of this last-16 tie.

Broader record still leans against them, but the gap has narrowed

For all that recent improvement, Galatasaray's overall record against English opposition remains mixed.

The Istanbul club, often referred to as "Cimbom," has now faced English teams 27 times in UEFA competitions and is preparing for its 28th such meeting. In those matches, they have recorded seven wins, nine draws, and 11 defeats. They have scored 30 goals and conceded 48.

Their English opponents over the years have included West Bromwich Albion, Manchester United, Chelsea, Leeds United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Tottenham, and Manchester City. Among them, Manchester United have been the side they have faced most often.

Liverpool has been an unusually manageable matchup for Galatasaray

One of the more striking details in the matchup is Galatasaray's record against Liverpool. The two clubs have met six times previously in European competition, all in the Champions League, and Galatasaray have lost only once.

Their first meetings came in the 2001-02 second group stage, when the match in England ended 0-0, and the game in Istanbul finished 1-1. They met again in the 2006-07 group stage, with Liverpool winning 3-2 at home before Galatasaray hit back with a 3-2 win in Istanbul.

This season has tilted the balance further. Galatasaray first beat Liverpool 1-0 in the league phase in Istanbul, then repeated the same scoreline in the first leg of this round-of-16 tie. Taken together, that leaves Galatasaray with three wins, two draws, and one defeat against the English club.

Away form in England remains the main concern

Even so, the setting of the second leg brings in a more difficult part of Galatasaray's history.

They have managed only one away win in England in European competition. Across 12 matches on English soil, they have recorded one win, three draws, and eight defeats. They have scored 12 times in those games while conceding 27, and they have kept just one clean sheet.

That away record stands in clear contrast to their stronger performances in Istanbul, where much of their success against English opposition has been built.

History offers reminders of both shocking results and major achievements

Galatasaray's European history against English clubs includes some of the most memorable nights in Turkish football.

One of the best known came in 1993, when they knocked out Manchester United in the Champions League second qualifying round. After drawing 3-3 away, they held the English side 0-0 in Istanbul and moved through in what was widely seen as a major upset.

Another landmark arrived in 2000, when Galatasaray beat Arsenal on penalties in the UEFA Cup final in Copenhagen. After the match ended 0-0 following extra time, the Turkish side won the shootout 4-1 and brought home Türkiye's first major European trophy in football.

Liverpool's record against Turkish clubs adds another layer

Liverpool has also built up a substantial history against teams from Türkiye. They have faced Turkish clubs 14 times in UEFA competitions, meeting Galatasaray six times and both Besiktas and Trabzonspor four times each.

Against Galatasaray, Liverpool have won only once, drawing twice, and losing three times. Their overall record against Turkish opposition is stronger because of better returns against Trabzonspor and Besiktas. In total, Liverpool has scored 22 goals and conceded 13 in those 14 matches.

Their 8-0 home win over Besiktas in the 2007-08 season remains one of the heaviest defeats ever suffered by a Turkish club in European competition.

A heavyweight setting waits in Liverpool

The scale of the challenge is underlined by Liverpool's standing in the game. The club has won 14 international titles, including six European Cups and Champions League crowns combined, three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups, and one FIFA Club World Cup.

They are also closely tied to one of the most famous finals in Champions League history, the 2005 comeback against Milan in Istanbul, where they recovered from 3-0 down at halftime to draw 3-3 and then win on penalties.
