Coco Gauff will face Elina Svitolina in the women’s singles final at the Rome Open after both players came through their semifinal matches on the clay courts of the Foro Italico complex.
The Rome Open is a top-level WTA 1000 and ATP 1000 tournament, bringing together leading women’s and men’s players in the Italian capital.
Third seed Gauff beat Romania’s Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-3 to move into the final for the second year in a row.
Cirstea, seeded 26th, had drawn attention earlier in the tournament after knocking out top seed Aryna Sabalenka in the third round, but Gauff kept control of the semifinal and closed out the match in straight sets.
Gauff lost last year’s Rome final to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini.
Gauff’s opponent will be Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina, who has already won the Rome Open twice, in 2017 and 2018.
Seventh seed Svitolina beat fourth seed Iga Swiatek 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 in a late-night semifinal, reaching the Rome final for the first time in eight years.
The women’s final between Gauff and Svitolina will be played on Saturday, May 16.
In the men’s draw, world No. 1 Jannik Sinner beat Russia’s Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 to set up a semifinal against seventh seed Daniil Medvedev.
Medvedev reached the last four after coming from behind to beat Spain’s Martin Landaluce 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
The other semifinal will bring together Norway’s Casper Ruud and Italy’s Luciano Darderi. Darderi advanced after defeating Spain’s Rafael Jodar 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-0, while Ruud had beaten Russia’s Karen Khachanov in the previous round.
The men’s semifinals will be played today.
