Erling Haaland scored twice in the final 12 minutes to give Norway a stunning 2-1 victory over Brazil at MetLife Stadium, with a late Neymar penalty proving only a consolation for a Brazilian side unable to convert its early pressure into goals.

Norway's win was secured through two Haaland strikes, both assisted by substitute Andreas Schjelderup, who entered at halftime and immediately altered the contest.

A last-gasp penalty converted by Neymar, himself a second-half substitute, set up a nervy finish, but it came too late to change the outcome.

Brazil squander penalty as first half ends goalless

Brazil had the better of the opening exchanges, creating the game's first clear opportunity as early as the 10th minute when Matheus Cunha won a penalty after a foul by Kristoffer Ajer in the box.

A VAR review confirmed the spot kick, but Bruno Guimaraes saw his effort saved by goalkeeper Orjan Nyland in the bottom right corner, keeping the scoreline level.

The first half remained tight and physical, with both sides generating chances.

Vinicius Junior tested Nyland from the left side of the box in the 40th minute and Odegaard went close for Norway moments later with a shot that Alisson Becker held in the center of the goal.

Six minutes of added time produced further half-chances, including a header by Cunha that sailed wide, before the teams went in level at 0-0.

Schjelderup-Haaland combination breaks Brazilian resistance

Norway's tactical reshaping at the interval proved decisive. Coach-initiated changes brought on Schjelderup and Oscar Bobb at the start of the second half in place of Antonio Nusa and Alexander Sørloth.

Brazil also introduced Endrick for Cunha on the hour mark, and Neymar came on for Gabriel Martinelli just before the 67th minute in an attempt to inject urgency.

The game's defining sequence arrived in the 79th minute. Schjelderup delivered a cross from the right, and Haaland met it with a precise header from the center of the box, directing the ball to the bottom right corner past a helpless Alisson.

Eleven minutes later, with Brazil pressing desperately for an equalizer, Haaland struck again, this time collecting a second Schjelderup assist and driving a left-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom right corner to double the lead.

Brazil refused to capitulate entirely. In the 90th minute, Casemiro drew a foul from Leo Østigard in the penalty area after Torbjorn Heggem also committed a foul in the build-up.

Neymar, who had earlier received a yellow card, stepped up and converted the spot kick low into the bottom right corner to make it 2-1. It was not enough.

Norway saw out the remaining two minutes and referee Ismail Elfath brought the match to a close, confirming one of the more dramatic results of the tournament.
