Romania has officially ushered in a new era, appointing Gheorghe Hagi as head coach of the national team following the death of Mircea Lucescu.
The Romanian Football Federation has confirmed that Hagi will take over the national side, stepping into the role left vacant after Lucescu passed away in hospital due to a heart condition. His death came shortly after Romania’s elimination by Türkiye in the 2026 World Cup European Qualifiers play-off semifinal.
Hagi, widely known for his past as both a player and a coach, brings with him experience that includes time spent in Türkiye, where he built familiarity with the country’s football environment.
The federation has signed Hagi on a four-year contract, indicating a long-term commitment rather than a short-term fix.
As Hagi settles into the role, attention is expected to shift toward how he shapes the squad and steers the team through upcoming competitions.
