Hull City's Turkish owner Acun Ilicali has described a wide range of emotions ahead of the club’s Championship play-off final at Wembley Stadium, where promotion to the Premier League will be decided in a single match.
Speaking to Anadolu Agency before the final, Ilicali said he was experiencing “multiple emotions at the same time,” including excitement, pride, and anxiety, as Hull City stands one victory away from reaching the Premier League.
Ilicali stated that both the players and coaching staff were fully motivated ahead of what he described as a potentially historic occasion for the club.
He emphasized that reaching the Premier League would represent “a miracle,” adding that the team was fully focused on completing the final step of a demanding season.
The Hull City owner also addressed recent controversy surrounding the club’s preparations, referring to the so-called “spygate” issue and a late change of opponent ahead of the final.
He explained that the team had spent several days preparing for one opponent before being required to adjust their tactical plans shortly before the match, leaving limited time for final preparation. Despite this disruption, he said the squad remains determined to compete at the highest level.
The final will be contested against Middlesbrough FC.
Reflecting on Hull City’s campaign in the EFL Championship, Ilicali noted that the club had been widely expected to struggle before the season began. However, he said he had always believed in the quality of the squad and praised the coaching staff for maximizing performance throughout the year.
Hull City secured their place in the play-off final after a strong run of form, exceeding early-season expectations.
Ilicali also highlighted the significant support from Hull City fans, noting that tens of thousands travelled to London despite distance and cost, demonstrating strong commitment to the club.
He described the past month as particularly challenging for everyone involved, both emotionally and physically.
Looking ahead, Ilicali said that if Hull City achieves promotion, the immediate priority would be to celebrate and allow players to recover after a demanding season.
He added that long-term planning would follow only after the conclusion of celebrations, should the club secure promotion to the Premier League.
