With Luciano Spalletti stepping down as Italy’s national team coach, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is actively searching for his successor. Among the high-profile names reportedly under consideration are Türkiye head coach Vincenzo Montella and Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho, according to Italian media.

Veteran coach Claudio Ranieri, currently managing AS Roma, was said to have been approached by the FIGC but declined the offer, citing his commitment to Roma. “It’s a great honor, but I’ve decided to stay,” Ranieri was quoted as saying.

FIGC President Gabriele Gravina is reportedly aiming to finalize the appointment before the World Cup qualifiers begin in September. While no official move has been made yet, Italian outlets claim that Montella is high on the shortlist, thanks to his recent success with Türkiye in the European Championship qualifiers and his past experience managing Serie A sides like Roma and Fiorentina.

Mourinho rumors stir buzz in Italy

Meanwhile, Jose Mourinho’s name has also surfaced in connection with the role. Although journalist Matteo Moretto reported that no formal offer has been extended to the Portuguese coach, the speculation has caused a stir in Italy, particularly among Inter Milan fans, who fondly remember Mourinho’s treble-winning season in 2010.

Other potential candidates

In addition to Montella and Mourinho, Daniele De Rossi, Gennaro Gattuso, and Roberto Mancini, who led Italy to the Euro 2020 title, are also believed to be on the federation’s radar.

The final decision is expected to be made in the coming weeks as Italy prepares for a crucial qualifying campaign.
