Kenan Yildiz, Servet Yardimci honored at Mediterranean Excellence Awards in Rome

The third edition of the Mediterranean Excellence Awards was held this year in Rome, recognizing individuals from the Mediterranean region who have made outstanding contributions in sports, culture, diplomacy and business.

Among the Turkish recipients were national footballer Kenan Yildiz and former Turkish Football Federation (TFF) head and ex-UEFA Executive Committee member Servet Yardimci.

The ceremony, organized under the patronage of the Italian Ministry of Culture by the Mediterranean Journalists Association, the Italian Sports Writers Association (USSI) and the European Sports Writers Association (AIPS), brought together prominent figures from across the Mediterranean.

The awards honor individuals whose work promotes international distinction, intercultural dialogue and peace.

Kenan Yildiz honored for sporting excellence, Mediterranean ambassadorship

Juventus midfielder Kenan Yildiz received the award in recognition of his rising career and role as a symbol of young talent bridging cultures in the Mediterranean. Unable to attend due to a UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid, Yildiz delivered a video message, saying: “I am deeply honored to receive this award. Wearing the number 10 jersey at Juventus, following in Alessandro Del Piero’s footsteps, carries great responsibility and I strive to perform at the highest level.”

He emphasized his role as a Turkish national team player: “I feel like an ambassador for the Mediterranean and aim to set an example for young athletes. My goal is to represent Turkey at the next World Cup and contribute to both Juventus and the national team in upcoming matches.”

Servet Yardimci receives Award for Lifetime Contributions to Football

Servet Yardimci attended the ceremony with his wife, Handan Yardimci. His award was presented by Charles Camenzuli, president of AIPS Europe and Gianfranco Coppola, head of USSI.

In his acceptance speech, Yardimci stated: “Receiving the Mediterranean Excellence Award is a great honor for me. This recognition is meaningful not only personally but also for my country.” He highlighted his tenure as TFF president and UEFA vice president, emphasizing his commitment to protecting and developing football.

Yardimci also noted Türkiye’s joint hosting of EURO 2032 with Italy, describing it as a unique and historic opportunity. He added, “Football brings cities and people together. This award demonstrates how sport can break barriers, promote peace, and inspire future generations.”

Regarding the Turkish national team under Italian coach Vincenzo Montella, Yardimci remarked: “Montella is highly regarded in Türkiye. Our young national team has great potential, and we hope to qualify for the World Cup under his leadership.”

Other notable recipients

Italian footballer Valentina Giacinti, who plays for Galatasaray Women’s Team, was recognized for her contributions to sports and the promotion of Mediterranean culture. Benfica coach Jose Mourinho was also honored for his achievements and embodiment of the Mediterranean spirit. Unable to attend, Mourinho shared a video message expressing gratitude and humility.
