Kenya’s Kilimo, Ethiopia’s Aderra win Istanbul Marathon titles

Kenya’s Rhonzas Lokitam Kilimo won the men’s race, while Ethiopia’s Bizuager Aderra took the women’s title at the Türkiye Is Bankasi 47th Istanbul Marathon, according to Anadolu Agency.

Spor Istanbul, a subsidiary of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), is organizing the 47th Türkiye Is Bankasi Istanbul Marathon, known as “the world’s only intercontinental race,” which was held for the 47th time.

The marathon started at 9:00 a.m. on the Asian side, next to the metrobus station by the July 15 Martyrs Bridge.

On the 42.195-kilometer (26.21 miles) course, which began 250 meters behind the July 15 Martyrs Bridge on the Asian side and finished in Sultanahmet Square, Kenyan athlete Rhonzas Lokitam Kilimo took first place with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 12 seconds.

Last year’s champion, Kenyan runner Dejene Debela, finished second with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 23 seconds.

Ethiopian athlete Sufaro Woliyi came in third, completing the race in 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 26 seconds.

On the 42.195-kilometer course, which started 250 meters behind the July 15 Martyrs Bridge on the Asian side and finished at Sultanahmet Square, Ethiopian runner Bizuager Aderra claimed the women’s title with a time of 2 hours, 26 minutes, and 19 seconds.

Another Ethiopian athlete, Sofia Assefa, finished second in 2:26:21, while Kenya’s Joan Jepkosgei placed third in 2:26:36.

Two Turkish athletes placed in top 10

Two Turkish athletes finished in the top 10 at the Istanbul Marathon.

Huseyin Can, who placed sixth in last year’s race, finished fifth this year with a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 58 seconds.

Another national athlete, Halil Yasin, finished ninth in 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 50 seconds.

Yavuz Agrali placed 11th with a time of 2 hours, 23 minutes, 24 seconds, while Mert Girmalegesse finished 14th, clocking 2 hours, 26 minutes, 3 seconds.

Total purse reaches $190,000, record bonus offered

Athletes who place in the 47th Istanbul Marathon will receive equal prize money in both the men's and women's categories.

A total of $190,000 will be awarded in the 42-kilometer (26.0 miles) category. An additional $5,000 bonus will be granted if the course record is broken.

Winners will receive $50,000, runners-up $20,000, third-place finishers $10,000, fourth-place finishers $5,000, fifth-place athletes $4,000, sixth-place finishers $3,000, seventh-place athletes $2,000, and eighth-place finishers $1,000.
