Tensions escalated outside an NBA Finals watch party near Bryant Park, where rowdy New York Knicks fans clashed with New York Police Department (NYPD) officers following a Game 3 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.
The incident, which took place after Monday's game, resulted in the injury of five police officers and more than 20 arrests as crowds turned disorderly.
Video footage from the scene also captured attendees in San Antonio Spurs attire being physically and verbally harassed by angry spectators.
The violence has sparked a fierce public feud between Madison Square Garden (MSG) officials and city leadership over upcoming security protocols.
According to The Athletic, the Knicks and MSG released a scathing statement blasting New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, labeling them the city's "biggest party poopers."
The team expressed outrage that strict security perimeters, originally implemented for Game 3 due to President Donald Trump's attendance, will remain in place for Game 4.
City officials defended the strict measures, pointing directly to the Bryant Park chaos as justification. Sam Raskin, a spokesperson for the city, stated that while the majority of fans celebrated safely, assaults on police officers and disruptive fights are entirely unacceptable.
For Wednesday night's Game 4, the city has permitted an outdoor watch party at the Garden but capped attendance at 1,000 ticketed fans, enforcing single-entry screening points and no reentry.
MSG ownership has urged the city to lift these restrictions, claiming the "frozen zone" is simply a convenient excuse to stifle fan celebrations.
