French footballer Kylian Mbappe has become the subject of renewed political debate in France following his recent comments reaffirming opposition to far-right political movements. His remarks have drawn criticism from senior figures within the National Rally, including Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella.

The controversy follows Mbappe’s interview in Vanity Fair, in which he defended his earlier statements encouraging voters to reject extremist parties during the French elections. He argued that professional athletes, as citizens, have a civic responsibility to engage with political developments, particularly during periods of heightened electoral tension.

Response from National Rally leaders

Jordan Bardella responded to Mbappe’s comments with a public statement referencing the player’s 2024 departure from Paris Saint-Germain. Bardella suggested that PSG’s subsequent sporting success highlighted inconsistencies in Mbappe’s career decisions.

Marine Le Pen later echoed similar arguments in a media appearance, referencing PSG’s performance following Mbappe’s exit and questioning the coherence of his public statements regarding sporting ambition and results.

Mbappe has repeatedly rejected the notion that professional athletes should remain politically neutral. He maintains that public figures are also citizens and, therefore, entitled—and, at times, obliged—to express views on issues affecting society.

He has previously warned about the rise of political extremism in France, stating that such developments carry significant consequences for the country and should not be ignored by influential voices.
