NBA superstar LeBron James will continue his historic career for an unprecedented 24th season, but he will not return to the Los Angeles Lakers.
His decision brings an end to an eight-year run with the franchise and becomes one of the biggest stories of the NBA offseason.
James informed the Lakers of his decision before the start of free agency.
In a message shared on X, James thanked the Lakers organization and fans for their support during his time in Los Angeles.
“It truly was an honor to wear the purple and gold while trying to continue the greatness and legacies that came before me,” James said. “Hope I made a few proud during my stint.”
Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss also praised James, calling him one of the greatest athletes in history and thanking him for his contributions to the team. She highlighted his leadership in helping the Lakers win the 2020 NBA championship, the franchise’s 17th title, during the league’s COVID-19 playoff bubble.
James joined the Lakers in 2018 and became one of the most important players in franchise history. During his time in Los Angeles, he helped deliver a championship, broke the NBA’s all-time scoring record, and made history by playing alongside his son, Bronny James, after the Lakers selected him in the 2024 NBA Draft.
The next step in James’ career remains unclear. Reports have connected him with possible moves to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, teams where he previously won championships.
The Golden State Warriors have also been mentioned as a possible destination, which could see James team up with Stephen Curry after years of competing against him.
James and Curry faced each other in four straight NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018, creating one of the most memorable rivalries in league history.
Even at 41 years old, James continued to perform at a high level last season. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game in the regular season, while posting 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game in the playoffs.
