Lionel Messi has reportedly reached a preliminary agreement to become the largest shareholder of Spanish second-division club Eldense, with the deal expected to move forward once legal and regulatory procedures are completed.
According to El Pais, Messi reached an agreement with Eldense's current owners to acquire a majority stake in the club. The transaction is expected to be made official in the coming days after the remaining contractual and legal steps are wrapped up.
Before the acquisition can be finalized, the due diligence process must be completed and Spain's Higher Sports Council, known by its Spanish abbreviation CSD, must approve the transaction.
Eldense compete in LaLiga2, the second tier of professional football in Spain.
The Eldense deal would mark Messi's second club ownership investment in Spain.
The 39-year-old footballer also bought UE Cornella in April, with the club competing in the Tercera RFEF, one of the lower levels of the Spanish football system.
Meanwhile, Eldense have struggled to get going at the start of the new LaLiga2 season. The club remains without a win after four matches and sits 20th in the standings with two points.
