Formula 1 racing will return to Türkiye starting in 2027, under a five-year agreement that will see Istanbul Park host the sport through the 2031 season, Türkiye's Minister of Culture and Tourism announced Thursday.
The announcement came after a meeting between Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy and Minister of Youth and Sports Osman Askin Bak at the Atatürk Cultural Center, where officials reviewed preparations for the race's comeback.
According to Ersoy, the deal guarantees that Istanbul Park will host the Türkiye Grand Prix each year from 2027 through the end of the 2031 season.
The agreement marks the circuit's third stint on the Formula 1 calendar, following runs from 2005 to 2011 and a brief return in 2020 and 2021.
Representatives from relevant government institutions and the Turkish Automobile Sports Federation also took part in Thursday's meeting, which focused on coordination between agencies, promotional planning and the steps needed ahead of the race's return.
Ersoy said the meeting addressed inter-institutional coordination, publicity campaigns and the groundwork required in the coming period to prepare for the race's return.
"We continue our preparations to bring together Türkiye's experience in international organizations with the excitement of Formula 1 once again," Ersoy wrote on X.
Neither Ersoy nor Bak detailed specific budget figures, infrastructure upgrades or ticketing plans in the announcement.
Istanbul Park, designed by German engineer Hermann Tilke, opened in 2005 on the Asian side of Istanbul and became known among drivers for its high-speed, multi-apex Turn 8.
The track hosted the Turkish Grand Prix annually from 2005 to 2011 before being dropped from the calendar amid financial disputes over hosting costs.
It returned for one-off races in 2020 and 2021 after the COVID-19 pandemic forced changes to the Formula 1 schedule.
Further details on the 2027 race, including its calendar date and ticketing, had not been announced as of Thursday.
