Fenerbahce is reportedly considering parting ways with head coach Jose Mourinho after a season that failed to deliver the long-awaited league title, according to Turkish media. However, the Portuguese manager’s €15 million ($16.98 million) release clause has left the club with few options.
According to Milliyet, Mourinho has no intention of stepping down and told Fenerbahce officials that he plans to stay. The situation has left the club in a financial and strategic bind, especially with the upcoming transfer window.
Earlier this year, Mourinho turned down an offer from the Portuguese national team during the winter transfer window. Now, Fenerbahce's management is hoping that a renewed approach from Portugal could persuade the veteran coach to leave voluntarily, which would allow the club to avoid the hefty payout.
Club President Ali Koc has previously stated that if Mourinho leaves by choice, he will be required to pay compensation to Fenerbahce, further complicating the scenario.
In the event Mourinho agrees to depart, Fenerbahce have already begun their search for a successor. Sporting Director Mario Branco is expected to lead discussions with potential candidates.
