Norway moved level with France at the top of Group I after edging Senegal 3-2 at MetLife Stadium in New York New Jersey on Monday, while Algeria boosted its knockout-stage hopes in Group J with a 2-1 comeback win over Jordan.
The result leaves Norway tied with France on six points through two matches, while Algeria stays in contention for a place in the knockout rounds heading into the final round of group-stage fixtures.
Erling Haaland scored twice and Marcus Holmgren Pedersen added another goal as Norway secured its second victory of the tournament. Senegal stayed in the contest through a brace from Ismaila Sarr and mounted a strong second-half push, but the West African side could not find an equalizer.
The defeat left Senegal without a point and facing a must-win clash against Iraq in its final group-stage match to keep its hopes of advancing alive.
Elsewhere in Group I, France defeated Iraq 3-0 in Philadelphia to remain top of the standings on goal difference. Kylian Mbappe struck twice and Ousmane Dembele also found the net in a match that was delayed for more than two hours because of severe thunderstorms.
In Santa Clara, Algeria came from behind to defeat Jordan 2-1 and keep its World Cup campaign alive. Jordan took the lead through Nizar al-Rashdan before Algeria responded through Amine Gouiri. Nadhir Benbouali then completed the comeback with the winning goal in the 82nd minute.
The victory moved Algeria onto three points, level with Austria, and set up a decisive final Group J meeting between the two sides in Kansas City on Saturday.
Earlier, Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 to move onto six points and take sole possession of first place in the group. Jordan, making its World Cup debut, remained without a point and will conclude its tournament against Argentina in Arlington, Texas, on Saturday.
Co-hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the 2026 FIFA World Cup began on June 11 and runs through July 19, featuring 48 nations competing for the title.
