Azat Ertan, 21, lost his left leg below the knee at age 10 after a traffic accident in Van. Now, he is training intensively to become Türkiye’s first para-climbing champion.

Inspired by his brother’s participation in climbing training sessions, Azat was spotted by coach Vedat Kutlu, who encouraged him to start the sport despite his disability. Initially training on artificial walls, Azat built confidence and improved his fitness.

Over time, he mastered balance using his arms, core, and single leg. Azat impressed his coach and fellow climbers by successfully completing an 18-meter (59.05 feet) natural rock climbing route using only his one leg.

He is now preparing for Türkiye’s first Para-Climbing Championship, set to take place from July 10 to 13 in Mus, aiming for the top spot.

Azat emphasizes that climbing is not only a physical challenge but also a mental battle, saying, “This sport made me who I am.”

Coach Vedat Kutlu praised Azat’s rapid progress and perseverance, saying, “No matter his final ranking, in my heart, Azat is the winner. His dedication to this demanding sport sets an example for other athletes.”

Kutlu highlighted that the natural rocky formations in Van provide a unique training ground, adding that they train five days a week on these terrains.

Following success at the national championship, Azat and his team aim to represent Türkiye with pride on the international stage.
