Türkiye international Orkun Kokcu has stirred controversy after reacting to a Portuguese League social media post announcing the league’s best midfielders of the season—a list that excluded the Benfica star.

Kokcu, 23, who joined Benfica last summer from Feyenoord, played 51 matches in all competitions this season, scoring 12 goals and providing 9 assists. Despite his impact, the Portuguese League’s official account named Morten Hjulmand (Sporting), Fredrik Aursnes (Benfica), and Tiago Silva (Vitoria Guimaraes) as the top three midfielders of the season.

Kokcu responded to the league’s post by commenting with two emojis—a laughing face and a clown—widely interpreted as sarcasm and criticism of the selection. The comment quickly gained traction, drawing hundreds of interactions within minutes.

Benfica finished second in the Liga Portugal behind rivals Porto, with Kokcu among the standout performers in an otherwise disappointing campaign for the Lisbon side.

The midfielder had previously voiced frustration about his role and expectations at Benfica, making headlines earlier in the season with comments seen as critical of the club’s management. His latest reaction is likely to further fuel speculation about his future.
