Dutch forward Memphis Depay had his passport stolen at a Brazilian airport, potentially preventing the Corinthians player from joining the Netherlands national team for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, according to ESPN.

The 31-year-old striker, who plays for the Brazilian Serie A club, faces difficulties reaching Thursday's match against Malta due to the theft, the American sports network reported.

Netherlands head coach Ronald Koeman acknowledged the setback would disrupt his squad preparations ahead of crucial qualifying fixtures.

Coach expresses frustration over circumstances beyond control

"This is an unfortunate situation for both Depay and us," Koeman said in a statement. "We wanted to prepare with a full squad for the national team, but there are circumstances beyond our control. Hopefully he will join the camp as soon as possible."

The incident comes at a critical time for the Dutch national team, which faces two key matches in UEFA's 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers Group G. The Netherlands is scheduled to play Malta on October 9, followed by Finland on October 12.

Depay joined Corinthians earlier this year after spells with European clubs including Barcelona, Lyon, and Manchester United. The experienced forward remains a key figure for the Netherlands national team as they pursue qualification for the 2026 World Cup.
