Red Bull is set to stage a rowing competition on Oct. 11 at Tersane Istanbul, a shipyard-turned-venue on the Golden Horn
According to the company, the event is set to bring sport and competition together in an unusual format.
In the contest, 16 mixed teams, each made up of one female and one male athlete, and a total of 32 athletes will compete. In the matchup, two rowing boats tied to each other with a rope will face off, and the goal will be to pull the opposing boat across the center line.
Along with rowing performance, the athletes' strength, endurance, strategy, and teamwork will also be decisive.
In each match, which starts at the referee's signal, the two teams will struggle to drag the rival boat across the center line. Matches will last a maximum of 10 minutes. If no winner is determined within that time, the referees will decide the result.
The tournament will be held in a single-elimination format. The contests will start with the round of 16 and be completed with the final after the quarterfinal and semifinal stages. Matches will be played in a "Best of 3" format.
Organized for the first time this year, Red Bull Rowing is looking for the strongest duo on the Golden Horn.
All university students who are passionate about rowing can take part, and the two athletes on a team must study at the same university.
All athletes must be 18 or older and present a current student certificate at registration. All athletes are also required to know how to swim, wear a life jacket, and attend a safety briefing. Each athlete can take part in only one team.
Teams are asked to find a partner and sign up, with registration having opened on Oct. 2. On Oct. 11, athletes must be ready for registration and equipment checks at Tersane Istanbul at 1 p.m. local time (10 a.m. GMT).
Teams then start in the round of 16 by pulling their first opponent across to the other side of the water, and the competition continues through the quarterfinals and semifinals to the final.
The first champion will be determined on the Golden Horn on Oct. 11 after the final duel. The winning team will be presented with the Red Bull Rowing trophy and medals.
