Following Portugal's 1-0 World Cup elimination by Spain in Arlington, Texas, Roberto Martinez announced his resignation as Portugal's head coach on Monday.
A late goal from Mikel Merino at the Dallas Cowboys' stadium knocked Portugal out in the Round of 16, ending the team's tournament run just short of the quarterfinals.
Martinez, 52, said after the match that it had been his final game in charge of the Portuguese national team.
"It is true that it was my last game with the Portugal national team," Martinez said, adding that he was grateful to the Portuguese people for what he described as an unforgettable period.
He said the strength and energy shown by the fans and the Portuguese public had stayed with him, and that he would carry the memory for life.
Martinez had led Portugal since 2023, with his departure widely expected as his contract was ending.
During his spell, he was regularly criticized for continuing to rely on ageing captain Cristiano Ronaldo. Before taking over Portugal, Martinez managed Belgium and also worked in British football with Swansea, Wigan and Everton.
