Turkish national basketball player Alperen Sengun recorded a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists as Houston defeated Atlanta 121-114 in the National Basketball Association (NBA) on Saturday, Oct. 24. A double-double means reaching 10 or more in two statistical categories in a single game.
Sengun also had one steal at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, where Houston secured its third straight win. Kevin Durant scored 22 points, while Reed Sheppard and Tari Eason added 19 each.
Seven Houston players scored in double figures. Amen Thompson posted his third consecutive double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
Atlanta nearly completed a comeback, cutting a 20-point deficit to five in the closing moments. Durant made two free throws with 18.9 seconds remaining to restore a three-possession lead.
The win gave Houston its first unbeaten start through three games since the 2017-18 season and spoiled Atlanta’s home opener. Atlanta had won its first two games on the road.
Houston, which led the NBA in offensive rebounds last season, had 13 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points. Sheppard, who shot 43% from three-point range last year, recovered from a one-of-six start to the season by going five of 11 from beyond the arc.
Atlanta shot 12 of 45 from the three-point range, including five of 22 in the first half. Jalen Johnson scored 26 points and tied his career high with 16 assists.
Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 18 points, and Dyson Daniels also had 18. Aaron Wiggins, who joined Atlanta from Oklahoma City in a summer trade, scored 16 points off the bench in his first home game with the team.
Houston and Atlanta will play the second game of their home-and-home series Monday in Houston.
Philadelphia also won its third consecutive game to start the season, defeating Milwaukee 127-116 at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Joel Embiid recorded a triple-double, which means reaching 10 or more in three statistical categories, with 28 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Jaylen Brown added 27 points, and Tyrese Maxey scored 26 points.
Turkish national basketball player Adem Bona played about 10 minutes for Philadelphia and finished with one rebound, one assist, and one steal. For Milwaukee, Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored 21 points, and Kel’el Ware added 19. The NBA schedule featured eight games on the day.
