Fenerbahce has reportedly reached an agreement with Portuguese coach Sergio Conceicao to take over as head coach, Turkish sports channel A Spor reported.
A Spor reporter Erdem Akbas said the Istanbul-based club’s management settled all matters with Conceicao. The contract is planned to run for 1.5 years, according to the report.
Fenerbahce management aims to bring Conceicao to Istanbul before the club’s match against English side Liverpool, the report said. Under the plan, the Portuguese coach is expected to watch the game from the stands.
The match is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 4, at Chobani Stadium Fenerbahce Sukru Saracoglu in Istanbul. It is the fourth round of the UEFA Champions League league phase, with kickoff set for 8:45 p.m. local time.
Fenerbahce parted ways with head coach Ismail Kartal in late October, less than 24 hours after a 2-1 loss to Istanbul rival Galatasaray in the Super Lig, Türkiye’s top football division. Kartal had returned in June for his fourth spell in charge.
Dutch former Fenerbahce player Dirk Kuyt was later appointed interim coach.
Fenerbahce is one of Türkiye’s biggest football clubs and plays its home games in the Kadikoy district on Istanbul’s Asian side.
