Sonmez falls short in second-round clash at Nottingham Open

Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez has been eliminated in the second round of the WTA 250 Lexus Nottingham Open after a closely contested three-set match against Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic.

Sonmez lost the match 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 in a battle that lasted nearly three hours, ending her impressive run in the grass-court tournament in Nottingham.

The 23-year-old had entered the event in strong form, delivering one of the standout results of the first round by defeating second seed and world No. 22 Leylah Fernandez in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6.
