Turkish tennis player Zeynep Sonmez advanced to the second round of the Prudential Hong Kong Tennis Open with a straight-sets win over Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska.
Sonmez, ranked 67th in the world in singles, beat the 99th-ranked Yastremska 6-4, 6-2 in the first round of the WTA 250 event. She will face the winner of the match between Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Sofia Kenin of the United States in the second round.
The tournament is played on hard courts at Victoria Park in Causeway Bay and runs from Nov. 2 to Nov. 8, according to the WTA.
Yastremska won the Hong Kong title in 2018, her first WTA singles title, beating China’s Wang Qiang 6-2, 6-1 in the final. Fernandez won the tournament in 2023, while Kenin won the 2020 Australian Open.
Sonmez reached a career-high ranking of 48th in July 2026, which made her the highest-ranked Turkish player in WTA history.
In 2025, she became the first Turkish player in the Open Era to reach the third round of a Grand Slam singles tournament, at Wimbledon. She won her first WTA singles title at the 2024 Merida Open and reached the third round of the 2026 Australian Open.
Sonmez lost in the second round of the Guangzhou Open in China last week to Switzerland’s Jil Teichmann.
