Tiger Woods entered guilty pleas Wednesday on careless and reckless driving charges tied to a March rollover crash in Florida, and a judge suspended his driver's license for five years.
"If you were to drive for any reason at all you would go immediately back to jail," Judge Darren Steele told the golf superstar during a brief hearing at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart, Florida.
Woods initially faced the more serious offense of driving under the influence, but that was dropped under the terms of a plea agreement in which he agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charges of careless and reckless driving.
The March 27 crash occurred in Florida when Woods' vehicle collided with a trailer-towing truck while trying to pass on a residential street, causing his car to flip on its side.
Investigators found two hydrocodone pills, an opioid painkiller, in his pocket, and while a breath test showed no alcohol, they concluded he showed signs of impairment.
The incident adds to a rough physical stretch for the 15-time major winner, who has had several back surgeries and also underwent operations for severe leg injuries sustained in a 2021 car accident in California.
He refused a urine analysis and was charged, jailed and released on bond.
Since the crash, Woods has travelled outside the United States to seek treatment at an inpatient facility, reportedly in Switzerland.
