Zeynep Sonmez on Tuesday became the first Turkish female tennis player to reach the second round at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the season.
In the morning session of the tournament’s second day, Sonmez, ranked No. 88 in the world, defeated Romanian Jaqueline Cristian, ranked No. 55, in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.
Competing in Wimbledon’s main draw for the first time, Sonmez secured her place in the next round, marking a historic achievement for Turkish tennis.
Türkiye's Minister of Youth and Sports, Osman Askin Bak, congratulated Sonmez on her success.
In a post on his X account, Bak said, “Zeynep Sonmez is achieving historic success. She became the first Turkish female tennis player to advance to the second round at Wimbledon. Great job Zeynep, here’s to many more, Allah willing…”
Sonmez will face the winner of the match between Karolina Muchova and Xinyu Wang in the second round.
The women’s singles champion is set to be decided Saturday, July 12.
