Turkish athlete Ahmet Yilmaz captured a bronze medal in the men's 77-kilogram Greco-Roman wrestling division at the 2025 World Wrestling Championships held in Croatia.
Competing in Zagreb, the Turkish national team wrestler advanced through multiple rounds before securing his place on the podium. Yilmaz opened his campaign with dominant performances, defeating Qatar's Saoud Berak Almefoaey by technical superiority with a 10-0 score and overcoming Bulgaria's Stoyan Kubatov 5-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
His quarterfinal bout against Armenian wrestler Malkhas Amoyan ended in defeat, but Yilmaz earned a second chance when his opponent advanced to the final, qualifying him for the repechage round under tournament rules.
In the repechage, the Turkish wrestler defeated American Kamal Ameer Bey 4-2, earning his spot in the bronze medal match.
There, he faced Iran's Alireza Morad Abdevali in the medal decider. Yilmaz clinched the bronze with a 6-3 victory over the Iranian competitor, marking a significant achievement for Turkish wrestling at the world level.
The medal adds to Türkiye's tally at the championships, which are being held in Croatia's capital. The tournament represents one of wrestling's premier international competitions, featuring athletes from around the globe competing across various weight classes in both Greco-Roman and freestyle disciplines.
Greco-Roman wrestling, which prohibits holds below the waist and use of legs in attacks, is one of the oldest forms of competitive wrestling and has been part of the modern Olympic program since the first Games in 1896.
