Türkiye dominates South Korea to stay unbeaten in VNL

Türkiye’s national women’s volleyball team defeated South Korea in straight sets (3-0) on Friday in Istanbul, extending their unbeaten streak to seven matches in the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL).

Record-breaking crowd in Istanbul

The match, played at Sinan Erdem Dome, drew 15,824 spectators, setting a new all-time attendance record for the VNL. Türkiye also held the previous record of 15,420 during a 2022 match against Italy in Ankara.

Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Osman Askin Bak, MP Mevlut Cavusoglu, Istanbul Sports Director Muhittin Ozbay, and Turkish Volleyball Federation President Mehmet Akif Ustundag attended Friday's clash.

Clean sweep with dominant performance

Set scores were 25-11, 25-13, and 25-17, with Türkiye showing complete control from start to finish. Led by Berka Buse Ozden with 12 points, the Turkish side outperformed South Korea in every department. Deniz Uyanik added 11 points, followed by Saliha Sahin (9), Melissa Vargas (8), Yaprak Erkek (8), Ebrar Karakurt (7), and Elif Sahin (1).

Türkiye began the match with a starting six of Deniz, Elif, Yaprak, Berka Buse, Vargas, and Saliha, with Simge playing as libero.

After a tight start in the first set (2-2), the home side surged ahead with powerful serves and tight blocks, ending the set 25-11.

They carried the same intensity into the next two sets, never giving South Korea a chance to recover.

Türkiye holds second place in the standings

With this victory, Türkiye remains second in the overall standings with 19 points, trailing only Italy on set ratio.

The win also earned the team 0.59 points in the FIVB World Rankings, keeping them in third place globally with 373.85 points. South Korea dropped to 256.6 points.

Türkiye will face Brazil on Sunday, June 22, in their final match of the Istanbul leg. The match will begin at 7:30 p.m. local time at Sinan Erdem Dome.
