Türkiye closed the 2026 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship with three medals, one gold and two bronze, after a men's team in the over-60 age category won the country's first title in the event in a decade.
The championship was held over five days in Chuncheon, a city roughly 70 kilometers (43 miles) northeast of Seoul, South Korea, and organized by World Taekwondo. It drew 1,417 athletes from 83 countries, according to the Turkish Taekwondo Federation. Türkiye was represented by 36 athletes competing across 30 disciplines.
The gold medal came on the final day of competition, when the over-60 men's team of Mustafa Yilmaz, Mehmet Orkan and Teyfik Celik won the title. It marked Türkiye's first gold medal at the championship since 2016.
On the same day, the pair of Seyda Nur Yavuz and Furkan Bayrak won bronze in the under-30 pair category. Yilmaz also took bronze on the opening day of the championship, competing individually in the under-65 men's category, completing Türkiye's medal count for the event.
A handover ceremony was held at the close of the championship, with Turkish Taekwondo Federation Deputy Chairperson Engin Sarikaya accepting the flag for the 2028 World Taekwondo Poomsae Championship, which will be held in Antalya, a city on Türkiye's southern Mediterranean coast.
Turkish Taekwondo Federation Chairperson Bahri Tanrikulu said the team returned from South Korea having secured Türkiye's first poomsae world title in ten years, and credited the athletes and technical staff involved. He said preparations for hosting the 2028 championship in Antalya had formally begun with the flag handover.
