Türkiye's men's national volleyball team, known internationally as "Filenin Efeleri" and coached by Slobodan Kovac, plays Latvia on Wednesday in its fifth and final Group D match of the 2026 CEV European Men's Volleyball Championship, with a place in the last 16 at stake.
The match takes place at BT Arena in Cluj-Napoca, a city in northwestern Romania, and is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. local and Turkish time.
Türkiye has won one of its four group matches so far, putting the team on three points. Latvia, which has played one match fewer, also holds three points after a single win. Latvia faces the group's last-place team, Switzerland, earlier on Wednesday.
The top four teams in Group D advance to the round of 16. France, Germany and Romania have already secured their places, leaving Türkiye and Latvia to compete for the group's final qualifying spot.
The outcome of the Latvia-Switzerland match will directly shape the equation facing Türkiye ahead of its meeting with Latvia. Should Latvia beat Switzerland, Türkiye would still need to defeat Latvia to advance, with the set score of that win becoming a deciding factor in the standings. Should Switzerland instead defeat Latvia, the winner of the Türkiye-Latvia match would advance to the round of 16, to be held in Bulgaria.
Following the results recorded so far in the group stage, Türkiye has dropped to 12th in the world rankings, while Latvia has fallen to 48th.
The 2026 championship brings together 24 national teams divided into four pools of six, with matches hosted across Bulgaria, Finland, Italy and Romania from Sept. 9 to 26. It marks the first edition of the men's European Championship held in an even-numbered year since 1958, following a change to the international volleyball calendar. From the round of 16, teams progress through single-match knockout rounds to the quarterfinals and semifinals, with the two semifinal winners meeting for the title on Sept. 26 in Milan.
Türkiye's best previous finish at the European Championship came in 2021, when the team placed 10th. Türkiye finished 13th at the 2023 edition and entered this year's tournament ranked 10th in the FIVB world rankings.
