Türkiye finished the second day of the 20th Mediterranean Games, held in Taranto, Italy, at the top of the medal table with seven medals in total: four gold, two silver and one bronze.
Türkiye earned its first medals of the Taranto 2026 Games in fencing. National epee fencers Enver Yildirim and Furkan Yaman faced off in the men's final, with Yildirim winning 15-13 for gold and Yaman taking silver.
In the women's epee, Nisanur Erbil reached the final but lost 15-11 to Spain's Lucia Martin-Portugues, earning the silver medal.
Türkiye picked up three more gold medals in taekwondo. Elif Sude Akgul won the women's 49-kilogram title by beating Croatia's Sofija Hinic. In the men's 58-kilogram event, Enes Kaplan took gold after defeating Croatia's Josip Teskera.
In the women's 57-kilogram category, Hatice Kubra Ilgun received the gold medal after her opponent, Morocco's Amina Dehhaoui, was disqualified for an illegal strike. Ilgun was hit on the chin, fell to the mat, and left the area on a stretcher after medical treatment.
In swimming, Sudem Denizli took bronze in the women's 200-meter backstroke final, finishing with a time of 2:13.13.
These results brought Türkiye's medal count to seven: four gold, two silver, and one bronze, putting the country in first place.
Türkiye's under-20 national football team started its Mediterranean Games campaign with a 2-2 draw against Morocco in Group A at Franco Fanuzzi Stadium.
Morocco scored first with a goal from Yahya Iguiz. After a red card in the 12th minute, Morocco played with 10 men but still made it 2-0 in the 49th minute thanks to Abderrahman Arkid.
Türkiye came back in the second half. Berkay Aslan scored in the 75th minute, and Emir Tugra Turhan equalized in stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw.
Türkiye's under-20 team will face North Macedonia in its second group match on Monday, Aug. 24.
